My Personal Statement

Marketing is ubiquitous: from the selling of goods and services, to the selling of ideas and virtual worlds. It is the underappreciated driving force behind products' success and often downfall.

All successful sellers appreciate this. Seth Godin has said previously that 'People do not buy goods and services. they buy relations, stories and magic’. This acknowledgement of the industry's power and beauty has increased my desire to be a part of this ever-evolving field.

I have been specifically interested in the digital side of marketing, with its great reach to all ages and walks of life. This accessibility opens up the possibility of the most representative and influential space which can greatly benefit all.

I have explored and expanded my fascination with this area by securing and delivering work for multiple clients producing copy for websites and assisting with visual layout. My experience includes website copywriting for Meg Rye, who is Principal Recruiter of product designers for Meta companies Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and Reality Labs, and Rachelle Watson-Nyeko, CEO and Founder of Wylde Coaching.

Both opportunities with these accomplished businesswomen enhanced my interpersonal communication and account management skills by learning my clients' values, designing the brief, responding to and anticipating clients' needs, and multidisciplinary video calls to share progress.

English A-level has enabled me to showcase my skills in the best light and highlight what I have to offer these professionals. It expanded the emotive field of my words and gave my writing more impact. My constant work improving my essays has made me a more rounded writer both at work and academically.

I have also participated in a marketing course run by Williams Nicolson, a leading London communications consultancy, over the summer of 2021. During this experience, I developed my organisational and teamwork skills. I was coached, with six colleagues, to plan and publicise a charity rickshaw ride from Brick Lane to Ben Nevis on behalf of the Darjeeling Children's Trust. All members of our team felt great satisfaction in applying our new marketing skills to assist orphaned children and sponsored students in India.

Studying Economics has developed my understanding of the power and reach of marketing to enhance economic welfare. Economics is the study of scarce materials and how they should best be distributed. In competitive markets, the difference between the financial success of a business or a product can be completely reliant on public face created by marketing. Having an economics background is hugely beneficial and supplements the numeric side of marketing, whether that's understanding market demand or seemingly irrational consumer behaviour.

Whilst reading The Undercover Economist, the detailed depictions of behavioural economics and behind-the-scenes marketing dynamics highlighted the importance of public perception as a key factor contributing to business success.

My passion and ability in marketing has furthermore been developed by my study of Philosophy as I can put myself in the shoes of others, even those I do not agree with. If Philosophy is the study of ideas about existence, reason, our values, minds and language, it will always be central to marketing content. I am driven to understand the process of thought for individuals and groups of people. Marketing demands understanding groups of people to better anticipate their needs and wants and what they will want to hear, see and think in the future.

My ability to step up and speak up has greatly improved in the debates and discussions we have held in my sixth form, ensuring I'll integrate in a future workplace.
